The year 2021 marks the 60th anniversary of two renowned development aid agencies – the U.S. Peace Corps and the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. These anniversaries offer a time to reflect on the eventful history of development aid– and to take a close look at the ever-changing requirements for successful development assistance in the 21st century.

Participants:

Alana DeJoseph:

With A Towering Task: The Story of the Peace Corps, the German-American filmmaker Alana DeJoseph has produced a comprehensive and enlightening historical overview of the Peace Corps. Narrated by Annette Bening, the viewpoints of both host country nationals and program alumni – so-called Returned Peace Corps Volunteers or RPCVs – add to the authenticity of this impressive documentary. Dr. Jürgen Karl Zattler:

Since November 2020, Dr. Jürgen Karl Zattler has been Director General at the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Prior to this, he served as Executive Director for Germany in the Boards of the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C. His work experience with the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development spans more than three decades, beginning in 1986 with a tour as Desk Officer for the Ministry’s West Africa Division.

Consul General Darion Akins:

One of these Returned Peace Corps Volunteers is Darion Akins, the U.S. Consul General at the United States Consulate General in Hamburg. From 1995 to 1998, he developed and implemented microfinance and income-generation projects in Zambia. Akins represents a multitude of former volunteers who have sought a career in public service following their formative Peace Corps years.
